Connect to the wireless network
Whether your wireless device auto detects an available network or, you manually scan for an available network, you can select an available UNM wireless connection — technically known as Service Set IDentifier (SSID) — to join.
Currently, there are three wireless connections (SSIDs):
-
The UNM_Wireless_Guest connection is an open network. Simply select it from the available wireless networks displayed by your wireless device. UNM_Wireless_Guest allows Web browsing and access for ITS-supported VPN clients. This connection is intended for guests on the UNM Campus. Any Web browsing you normally do is available with this connection, including Web-enabled email like UNM's Webmail.
-
The UNM_Wireless_Web-Auth requires authentication. Start your Web browser before or after you select this network, and the browser will be redirected to a Web page for authentication, requiring your NetID and password. UNM_Wireless_Web-Auth access allows the use of "stand-alone" email clients, e.g., Outlook, Mulberry, Macintosh Mail, etc. and other applications that require a network connection.
-
The UNM_Wireless_Secure connection is a secure and encrypted wireless network. In addition to being redirected to a Web page for authentication, UNM_Wireless_Secure will require additional configuration for Windows and for Macintosh.
Read the Wireless FAQ before you connect to the wireless network.
Read UNM's Wireless Standard.
Wireless Quickstart
Where are ITS-supported wireless networks located?
Most buildings and some open areas on the UNM Main campus have wireless access. See the sidebar on the right for building list and Fast Info.
Campus coverage map available also.
What do I need to connect to the wireless network?
A desktop or laptop computer equipped with a wireless network card.
Where can I get a wireless network card?
You can purchase the preferred Cisco wireless network card at the Bookstore.
I already have a wireless network card, but not a Cisco card, will my card work?
Most 802.11g and 802.11b wireless cards will work. In some cases, both the "g" and "b" cards may require a firmware update available from the manufacturer's web site. The Macintosh AirPort Extreme / AirPort card is compatible with the ITS-supported wireless network. Check for available AirPort card firmware updates with Mac's Software Update utility.
