Backup and Data Recovery

ITS keeps only a limited GroupWise backup for system recovery purposes. While it is possible to recover data for individuals, it is extremely time consuming, resource intensive and costly. ITS cannot honor email recovery requests from individuals on our GroupWise system unless it can be proven that the lost information will have significant impact on University business and cannot be recovered in any other manner.

Email systems should not be relied on to be a document storage system. GroupWise client software has several backup and archiving options that allow you to easily manage those functions on your own desktop computer or local network directories. If you require reliable email, calendar and contact data retention, familiarize yourself with GroupWise's Trash management and Archive options. See the GroupWise Client Users Guide and ITS FastInfo for information and instructions.

Email Opt-in, Opt-out

The ITS GroupWise system has been designed to preserve your @unm.edu email address. As a result, email sent by a ITS or Salud GroupWise user will automatically go the recipient's GroupWise mailbox, not the main UNM Inbox. Consequently, if you are using ITS GroupWise, you must decide if you will receive your email in GroupWise (Opt-In), or have your GroupWise email and appointment information forwarded out of GroupWise to your UNM Inbox (Opt-Out). Because GroupWise email is tightly integrated with other GroupWise functions, we recommend that you Opt-In and use GroupWise for your email. If you choose to take no action, then you will have to check your GroupWise mail and UNM Inbox for mail.
